A metronome is highly recommended. Course Description: Rehearsal and performance for flute ensemble. This is a required course for flute majors, and is open to flute minors. Course Goal: The goal of this course is to expose students to flute ensemble repertoire and practice good ensemble technique while developing confidence in performance. The Ensemble will perform at least once in Friday Student Recital hour every semester. If the Ensemble is invited to perform at another venue, such as the Flute Society of Kentucky annual Flute Fair in January, students are expected to be willing to try to accommodate the group and make the time and effort to perform. Topics include: stage presence, critical listening, tuning, melody vs. accompaniment balance, rhythmic accuracy, musical style and interpretation. Course Outcome: Students will blend tones, learn to lead and follow in an ensemble setting, learn to adjust pitch to match the group and be a "team player." Course Grading: Your grade in this course depends upon your level of preparation for each coaching, and your overall attendance for coachings and performances. Grades for level of preparation may be interpreted as: A = Consistently on time, eager to learn, with all necessary materials, notes learned, markings observed, ready to make music. Perfect attendance. B = Consistently on time, interested, with most of all necessary materials, notes learned but lacking dynamics or expression. One unexcused absence (from coaching). C = Occasionally late, only mildly interested, frequently missing necessary materials, struggling with notes and markings. Two unexcused absences (from coaching). D = Frequently late, obviously bored, consistently missing necessary materials, sight-reading assigned pieces. More than two unexcused absences (from coaching). F = No show at a performance. Attendance is part of your grade. You may be excused from a coaching or a performance if you are sick and you have called me in advance. This is particularly important for performances. Otherwise, you may receive an F for the semester for not showing. A University Excuse, turned in to me in advance, will excuse you from coachings or performances. Other reasons for missing a coaching may be excused at my discretion. If I am unable to attend a regularly scheduled coaching due to illness or university business, the coaching will be rescheduled as soon as possible.
