The Department of Music at Eastern Kentucky University offers a comprehensive program of financial assistance. Awards vary in amount and are provided to talented young musicians preparing themselves for careers in music and music education. An additional purpose is to insure that all the instrumental and vocal specialties needed by Eastern's top-rated performing ensembles are provided. Although a majority of the music scholarships are awarded to prospective music majors, talented non-music majors will be considered for awards.

To be considered for scholarship assistance, an audition must be scheduled with a member of the faculty of the department. Eastern's scholarship auditions take place on our annual Music Scholarship Days. Audition days are announced yearly beginning in January Interested students should contact the department regarding the dates and times best suited to their schedule. If none of the dates listed for a particular academic year are satisfactory, students may write and arrange for a time better suited to their needs. In certain instances where distance is a problem, a taped audition may be substituted.

The musical selections you use for your audition should highlight the skill you possess on your instrument or in voice. Use compositions that will show you at your very best. Acceptable music for auditions will be any solo work for your instrument or voice range. Instrumentalists may also be asked to perform scales or sight-read. If you have an accompanist, it would be helpful to bring him or her to accompany you.

Recipients of scholarships are required to participate in performing ensembles and maintain a cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 to retain the scholarship. Performance expectations are provided to all recipients prior to the signing of their scholarship agreement.
