The EKU High School Honors Bands, January 15-17, 2009 will be open to all band students in grades 9-12 upon the recommendation of their band director. Four honors bands will be selected. Students will be selected based on the teacher recommendation process, grade level and on auditions the first evening of the event. Final band placement will be based on the auditions on Thursday evening, January 15. Students will be sent audition materials in advance. The application deadline is November 15.
Procedures For Submitting Students for Honors Bands Membership
I. Each school may initially submit up to 20% of their concert band enrollment. PLEASE DO NOT EXCEED THIS LIMITATION. Additional student applications may be requested from a school to fulfill instrumentation needs in the four bands, particularly in double reeds, low clarinets etc. We cannot, however, guarantee that all students submitted will be accepted.
II. Each band student in grades 9-12 currently listed in our prospective student file will receive information about the High School Honors Band Clinic in an effort to elicit interest in this event. To be considered, however, they must secure a Recommendation Form from their band director and the director must recommend the student for them to be a candidate for selection. Directors are under NO obligation to recommend students they feel are not worthy of participation.
III. A student Recommendation Form must be submitted for each student. The student should complete the top of the form, the director the bottom. Directors need to consider carefully the rankings they assign each of their students, as this is considered in the selection process. Also, please indicate the total number in your band on the applications.
IV. THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF RECOMMENDATIONS IS TBA. HELP US HELP YOU BY SUBMITTING THE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR STUDENTS EARLY.
Cost of Participation and Responsibility
I. Each student will be assessed a $45.00 participation fee payable the day of registration. Housing will be available at a group rate from local motels at the student's expense. Meals are the responsibility of each participant. Many local restaurants will provide discount coupons to aid with meal costs. Information regarding the housing will be sent to the band directors with notification of acceptance of students into the program. Each school must make their own reservations. Housing information will be sent with student acceptance notifications.
II. EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUPERVISION OR CHAPERONING OF STUDENTS ATTENDING THIS EVENT. EACH SCHOOL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR STUDENTS.
