| The Steel Band traveled to Orlando,
Fl. to perform for the EKU alumni's "Splash in Orlando" on Oct. 13 and
14th. They will also be performing a concert for the students at Madison
Middle School on November 9. Booking is available for social events and
spotlight concerts. For more information contact Jason Koontz, Director
ofpercussion studies at 622-1334.
The Percussion Ensemble concert on November
14 promises to be quite a musical event which will feature all of EKU's
percussion ensembles including percussion ensembles 1 & 2, percussion
chamber ensemble, steel band, and the new African drum and dance ensemble.
Percussion ensembles 1&2 and the chamber ensemble will feature music
from composers such as Nigel Westlake, Gordon Peters, and Michael
Udow. David Gordon's composition "Bali", and an arrangement of the Kecek
or "monkey chant" (based on the haunting sounds of the Balinese gamelan),will
be one of the many highlights of the concert.
The trumpet studio is planning on audtioning
for a performance spot at the 2001 International Trumpet Guild Conference.
The group performed two years ago, and are hoping to be selected again.
We are anticipating a very exciting spring, with jazz and classical competitions
at the National Trumpet Competition and the International Trumpet Guild
Conference. Phil Johnson is expecting to enter the jazz catagories at both
competitions while Denver Dill and Andrea Adams hope to compete in the
classical catogories.
The EKU Jazz Ensemble has been selected
to perform at the 2001 KMEA Conference to be held in Louisville in February.
It is an honor to be selected, and the students are excited about the opportunity
to showcase their talents in front of the largest gathering of music educators
in the state. The band will feature Rob James, Chair of the Department
of Music on vibraphone. He will join the band on an exciting chart
by Louis Bellson called La Bande Grande.
Additionally, the jazz ensemble will present the EKU Jazz Festival
on April 21, 2001. This years festival will include a high school invitational,
where groups can come and perform in a non-competitive atmosphere. We willhave
an nationally known guest artist to perform with the EKU Jazz Ensemble
and give a clinic during the day. (We are hoping to get Brandford Marsalis
- we will let you know!)
A tour is also in the planning stage for the spring. We are
hoping to get accepted to perform at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival and will
tie a tour into that trip. So as you can see, the EKU Jazz Ensemble is
on the move! All of this inaddition to our scheduled concerts and events
throughout the year. Hope to
see you at a concert soon! |
