Dr. Richard Crosby was elected as the
Chairman of the Province Governors Council for Phi Mu Alpha for the 2000-2003
triennium and as the National Secretary/Treasurer. He continues to serve
as Governor of Province 25 (Kentucky, Southern Indiana). He was promoted
to full professor this year and is teaching private piano, class piano
and music history. His CD, An American Portrait, received an extremely
favorable review in the July/August issue of the American Record Guide:
"The brilliant young American pianist Richard Crosby offers us an
unusual program of American piano works. Some of these may not be abiding
masterpieces, but there is nevertheless a strong need for them to be heard.
Griffes's Four Roman Sketches are certainly well beyond that
category--beautiful impressionist poems on a level with much of
Debussy and Ravel--and this new reading by Crosby is one of the few available
of thecomplete set. In all works, his playing unfolds on a very high artistic
plane, with a wealth of tonal shading, distinctive and supple musical characterization,
fluent, robust technique, and superior musical instincts."
Dr. Connie Rhoades, Assistant Professor
of Clarinet, performed as a clarinet soloist at the International Clarinet
Association ClarinetFest on July 1 3, 2000. She was one of 67 clarinetists
from around the world invited to perform. The Conference was held at the
University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK and was a five-day event featuring
clarinet recitals, master classes, lectures and exhibits.
Dr. Karin Sehmann had an article published
in The Journal of Research in Music Education titled "The Effects of Breath
Management Instruction on the Performance of Elementary Brass Players"
which appeared in the Summer 2000 edition. She has also recently been named
the Research Chair for the state of Kentucky by the Kentucky Music Educators
Association.
