Make sure to read your Vocal Area Guidelines Book from the Eastern Kentucky University Department of Music. This is available online. The following information is in addition to this basic syllabus and applies only to the voice students in Dr. Wolfs studio:
Requirements: Attend weekly lessons. Be prepared by practicing the technical exercises assigned and the literature. Do your best to know the pitches/rhythms, pronunciations, and translations before coming to the lesson. If you do not understand your assignment in any way, be sure to ask.
Supplies: scores for assigned songs, pencil, water, blank paper, cassette tape, blank video tape
Absences: If you are unable to attend, supply Dr. Wolf with advance notice. ALWAYS cancel or reschedule your lesson if you are sick. Only healthy singers should be in the studio. This is for their own vocal health and the vocal and general health of others! Failure to show up at your appointed time without notification constitutes a forfeit of a lesson. Lessons canceled by the student are not guaranteed to be made up although I will make an effort to do so for legitimate excuses. It is your responsibility to request a make-up lesson for lessons that you cancel because of illness. If you are ill, just call. Any lessons canceled by me will be made up. In cases of extreme scheduling conflicts, some makeup lessons may be a part of studio class or include a reading or listening assignment.
Song Analysis Forms: To guide you in your analysis of songs for learning and memorizing, you will complete a form for each song assigned to you during the semester. These are not optional, although I will help you, as necessary, in your analysis. These must be turned in at the due date provided when the song is assigned. MUS 722 and 822 students and those who have completed four semesters in Dr. Wolfs studio are exempt.
Jury/Final Exam: Students will sing for the voice faculty during Finals Week. This is your jury. For song and language requirements, see the Vocal Department Syllabus. Requirements vary by degree program and number of credit hours. The faculty member assigns repertoire with some input from the student. Be on time and prepared. Make sure to bring copies of your jury sheets.
Recital Attendance: Music Majors must meet recital attendance requirements set by the Music Department. Voice students are required to attend faculty and student vocal events unless excused in advance by your voice teacher.
Vocal Area Masterclasses: The schedule for these is found on the Vocal Area Webpage.
Studio Class: Studio Class is designed to help you learn to analyze vocal sound, perform with freedom and without nerves, and gain in vocal knowledge. Attendance is required. If your schedule prohibits attendance, provide written "proof" of your conflict. Dates and times of Studio Classes will be given to each student. All students are required to sing at Studio Class two or more times.
Grading: Lesson grades will be given at each lesson/each week. The
grade will consider each of the following points:
1. preparation
a. technical
b. literature
2. effort during lesson
3. cooperation (behavior, willingness to change/try new approaches)
4. Attendance is recorded and tardiness is noted
