Randy Westbrook received his Ph.D. and M.M. in Musicology from the University of Memphis and completed a B.A. degree in music at Murray State University. His dissertation was entitled "Rock, Minimalism, and Experimentation with Sound in the Postmodern Era: A Synthesis." Before joining the faculty at Eastern Kentucky University he taught various courses in musicology and ethnomusicology at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Memphis. Westbrook's research interests include experimental music in America, minimalism, jazz studies, Memphis Music, and popular music in America. His latest publications (2006) include two reviews (one for a book, one for a DVD) for the Journal of the American Musicological Society concerning the life of Robert Moog, and two subsequent book reviews (dealing with blues artists Robert Johnson and Josh White) are scheduled for publication in the Journal of the Society for American Music in November, 2007. He recently presented papers for the South-Central region of the American Musicological Society and the Athena Festival at Murray State University. Westbrook continues to be active as a performing musician in the Central Kentucky region as a member of the Eastern Kentucky University faculty jazz quintet, and he is comfortable playing in many styles including jazz, classical, blues, soul, rock, and reggae. While living in Memphis, TN he performed on almost 800 gigs in six years playing with members of The Hi Rhythm Section, The Bar-Kays, The Isaac Hayes Movement, and Public Enemy. He also opened up for B.B. King twice, performed briefly with Chris Thile and Eric Gales, played on a jingle for the Memphis River Kings (a minor league hockey team) recorded at Sun Studios, and performed on Beale Street Caravan, a nationally broadcast radio program.
