COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To provide current and professionally accepted information regarding clarinet performance and teaching skills.
  2. To acquaint the student with basic information regarding embouchure, tonguing, hand position, finger technique and stylistic interpretation.
  3. To make available and accessible, source material which will initiate an interest and desire for achievement and communication.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Ten percent missed lessons is the maximum allowable unexcused absences. For two hours of credit, this means a maximum of two one hour classes. All unexcused absences beyond this shall be assigned the grade of F.

MISSED CLASSES:

  1. If a student misses a class without notifying the Instructor a reasonable time in advance, the Instructor is not obligated to make up the class.
  2. The Instructor will reschedule lessons of students who must miss classes for good cause and who have notified the Instructor a reasonable time in advance, preferably 24 hours minimum notice.

    1. Embouchure
    2. Articulation Styles
    3. Tongue Position
    4. Tonguing

TECHNIQUE

    1. Hand Position
    2. Finger Motion
    3. Alternate Fingerings
    4. Resonance Fingerings

PEDAGOGY

BIBLIOGRAPHY/DISCOGRAPHY

    1. Solo/Ensemble Music Lists
    2. Books
    3. Method Books
    4. Recordings

EQUIPMENT

    1. Reeds
    2. Mouthpieces
    3. Ligatures

BREATHING/BREATH SUPPORT

SUPPLIES

PRACTICE TIPS

AUXILIARY INSTRUMENTS

  1. Perform a solo on clarinet.
  2. Perform major scales and chromatic scale from low E to high C on clarinet.
  3. GRADING PROCEDURES:

    Grades are based on the following criteria:

    1. Satisfactory completion of a well-organized Clarinet notebook.

    2. Class attendance and lesson preparation.

    3. The Instructor's estimate of the student's progress in a given semester.

  4. Performance of solo and scales on clarinet at the end of the semester.

The Grading Scale is as follows:

90-100 = A

80- 89 = B

70- 79 = C

60- 69 = D

Below 60 = F

The first class will last for the full scheduled period.
