Class Schedule: Wednesday Evenings 7:00 — 9:45 PM

Venue: Foster 300

Format: Performance/ Rehearsal

Course Description:

The EKU Steel Band allows students to gain performance experience in a non-western musical idiom - specifically the music of Trinidad and Tobago. The main focus of the ensemble is to learn and prepare literature for performance and, in addition, offers the opportunity to educate through various run-out lecture/concerts. Advanced members of the ensemble are encouraged to participate in a smaller steel combo, comprised of 5 - 6 members, that will help to raise money for new instruments and tuning fees.

Evaluation:

Grading is based on attendance and preparation in rehearsal. An unexcused absence in rehearsal will result in the loss of one letter grade. Participation in all aspects of rehearsal is expected, and will also effect grading.

Grade Scale: A = 100 — 90

B = 89 — 80

C = 79 — 70

D = 69 — 60

F = 59 — 0

Attendance:

Due to the extreme importance of individual parts and preparation in an ensemble of this type, any unexcused absence will result in the loss of a letter grade. Three unexcused absences will result in an F in the course. Please be responsible and inform the instructor ahead of time in the case of emergency based absences.

Music Preparation:

Once a piece is assigned, it is your responsibility to learn notes, dynamics, style, and all other aspects of the performance. If you are not prepared for rehearsal-which is not practice-assigned part(s) will be taken away. No outside influences excuse you from rehearsal. You need to be a TEAM PLAYER. Please keep abreast of the schedule provided, schedule changes, and other commitments. If a piece is reassigned for some reason, a grade of an F for the semester will be given! In addition, all rehearsals will begin on time - set up your equipment early enough to start on time. If you are coming from another class prior to the rehearsal and are across campus ask someone else to set your equipment up for that day. Always bring a pencil to rehearsal.

FALL 2003 SEMESTER ACTIVITIES

This semester the steel band class will be designated as rehearsal time to put together an indoor drum line — a competition group who will perform at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) which takes place in Louisville Ky. on November 21, 2003. Members of the competitive group will need to become members of PAS ($25 electronic or $55 publications) to participate and a fee of $45 dollars per student will be collected during the first full week of school to pay for equipment needs, transportation to, and lodging at the Convention. The total will be $70 for a student to join PAS as an electronic membership and pay the EKUPS Dues. All students are expected to pay to participate — no exceptions.

Students involved in the indoor competition will also need to register for MUS 250 (CRN 12747) — we will be utilizing this rehearsal time for Indoor drum line as well 6 — 10 PM.

The first meeting will take place on wed. August 20th in room 300 at 6PM — to discuss audition information.

IMPORTANT DATES

The indoor drum line will be making a short tour of southern and western Kentucky prior to the PASIC competition. Students should plan on informing their instructors when school starts that they will be absent for three days (Nov. 19, 20, 21). Class excuses will be provided for the trip, but make sure you have good attendance so that missing these days does not put you in jeopardy of failing a class. Some instructors are more lenient than others, so be responsible. There will also be a performance at a r WGI Clinic on- EKU's campus on Saturday, December 6th . Please plan on being available for this important date.
