Studio Percussion Class:
Studio class will be used for student feedback, master classes, clinics,
forums, extra rehearsals (when needed) and equipment maintenance / housecleaning.
all percussion majors are required to attend each class. In addition, students
throughout the course of the semester may be asked to perform musical selections
for their peers or give a presentation on a short percussive research project.
On some occasions this class time may be used for extra steel band practice.
Course description:
Applied lessons are available to all students who attend EKU, however lesson
times will be arranged for music majors first and if time permits, non-majors
can arrange a specific lesson time.
The university charges $50.00 for every applied lesson, which is added to your tuition bill. Credit hours for lessons range from 1 to 4 credits at the undergraduate level and up to 6 at the graduate level.
Each credit hour of lessons equals one 30 minute lesson meeting per week for a total of 16 lessons. If you sign up for more than 2 credits, an additional 30 minute lesson will be arranged if possible. Keep in mind that every lesson requires a minimum of 7 hours of practice per week. If you are a performance major, it is expected that you practice at least 20 hours every week.
Course criteria:
You must complete a jury every semester during Finals week. If you
perform a Junior or Senior Recital, this requirement is waived for the semester
in which the recital is presented. Sophomores must perform a full faculty jury
during the fourth semester of private study. If the full faculty jury is passed,
the requirement of completing a percussion jury is waived for the semester in
which the competency is completed. If you do not pass you Sophomore Comprehensive,
you can not enroll in MUS 347.
Juries are to last around 15 minutes reflecting materials studied throughout the semester. Scales, exercises and specific methods will be required every jury. Students are to provide the jury committee with one copy of their material at the time of the jury. In addition, three typewritten copies of the student's jury evaluation sheets must be provided to the committee at the time of the jury. Your averaged jury grade will count as 1/4 of your final semester lesson grade.
Any student who performs a recital more than seven weeks prior to the jury date must still play a jury. A seven week period is sufficient time to prepare new material for the jury examination. if the recital falls within seven weeks of the jury date, then the student is exempt from the jury in that semester.
Grading:
You must show up to lessons to get a grade. Again, being professional is the
key! If you need to reschedule- please call or leave a note in my box. If you
miss a lesson more than once, do not expect me to keep your space available.
Alternate lesson times will be arranged when the instructor has a conflict. Unexcused absences will not be made-up and will be treated as a failing grade for that week of study. Lessons are for you! I expect enough practice time to make yourself a better performer. Consistent growth is important. If you have time to be in the lounge-you have time to practice.
Applied students are required to attend all formal percussion recitals and percussion ensemble concerts. Unexcused absences will result in lowering the applied lesson one letter grade. It is also a common courtesy to help tear down and assist in moving equipment after performances. Your colleagues appreciate the help and the post concert celebration will begin sooner.
All recital repertoire MUST be approved by percussion faculty and ready for performance at least three weeks prior to the recital date.
