Qualifications

Qualified to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in guitar, music history, and music technology. Guitar courses include applied lessons (classical and jazz), ensemble coaching, history, pedagogy, literature, masterclass, and guitar class for non-majors. History courses include surveys of all style periods including jazz and American music along with seminar topics in notation, J.S. Bach, chant, symphonic literature, and early music. Technology courses can survey or specialize in hard disk digital recording, MIDI sequencing, music notation, and web design for musicians. Software instruction includes Digital Performer, Deck, Peak, Protools, Garageband, Sonicworks, Finale, Sibelius, Toast, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and BB Edit among many others.

Performance Preparation

Classical Guitar: Graduate instruction under David Dolata and Richard Goering; studies include guitar performance, pedagogy, history, and literature. Undergraduate instruction under Joseph Fratiani and Michael Fogler. Masterclass instruction under Christopher Parkening, David Russell, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, Manuel Barruecco, Stan Bumgardner, Sharon Isbin, Clare Callahan, Joseph Hagedorn, Peter Segal, Julian Gray, and Ronald Pearl, among others. Auxiliary Private instruction under David Russell, Scott Tennant, and Clare Callahan.

Teaching Experience

 

1993 – Present

Applied Guitar Instructor for the Department of Music at Eastern Kentucky University .

  • Created the guitar program at EKU - complete with Graduate and undergraduate curriculum.
  • Created the EKU Guitar Ensemble.
  • Developed the EKU Guitar Class for Non-majors.
  • Developed the EKU Commercial Music ensemble.

2000 - Present

Music Technology Instructor for the Department of Music at Eastern Kentucky University.

  • Redesigned the music technology program at EKU by initiating studies in MIDI sequencing, Hard Disk Digital Recording, Music Notation Software (Sibelius and Finale), HTML design for musicians, and a brief segment combining video and audio production. The course is now required for all EKU music majors

2000 - Present

L.A.N. Administrator for the Department of Music at Eastern Kentucky University.

  • Redesigned the Departmental web pages, created numerous web pages including audio/video pages to feature EKU music ensembles, designed web access for students and faculty for various items (jury forms, recital guidelines and forms, comprehensive examinations, faculty handbook, and so forth.)
  • Diagnose and repair computer, software, and network related problems for music department faculty and staff.

2000 - Present

Guitar Camp Director for Foster Music Camps at Eastern Kentucky University.

  • Designed and created the Foster Music camp for Guitar at EKU. It provides a one-week program of serious guitar study for pre-college guitarists.

2000 - Present

Music History Instructor (PTI) for the University of Kentucky.

  • Currently teaching Music Appreciation (WWW course: www.connect4education.com) and the Graduate Music History Review Course.
  • Prior courses include:
    • The History and Sociology of Rock Music (Mus 222)
    • The History of Jazz (Mus 300/AAS 100).

2000 - 2004

Applied Guitar Instructor for students enrolled in the School of Music at the University of Kentucky.

  • Created a join study program with the University of Kentucky School of Music allowing U.K. music majors to study guitar at Eastern Kentucky University and transfer the applied credits to the University of Kentucky.

Technology co-instructor for the University of Kentucky Summer Music Technology Series.

  • Taught notation software applications (Sibelius and Finale), MIDI sequencing, and Web design.

2003

Music History instructor for Eastern Kentucky University.

  • Taught graduate level course in symphonic literature (Mus 555).

Guitar Instructor for the University of Kentucky Fine Arts Institute.

  • Developed a class instruction guitar course for the UK Fine Arts Institute.
