Saxophone.org

This website is really just a list of links to different sites, and so I give this 2 out of 5 for content, since it has no true content of its own. The load speed is quick, however, due to the simple design and the minimal content of the page itself, and so I give it 5 out of 5. Navigability is very simple because the different sections of links are all on the same page, nested in the parent file. But the actual info is on other websites, and so to retrieve any of it you must go off of the site completely by way of the link, so I give this site a 3 out of 5 on navigability. The graphics are smooth and simple, not cluttered, but still nice and professional, I give it 4 out of 5. So overall, I rate this website a 3.5.

Saxontheweb.net

Saxontheweb.net seems to be a helpful site, with many articles to read and links to sheet music, accessories, etc. The content is interesting and well maintained, as many of the articles appear to be recent or new. I give it a 4 out of 5. Load speed is quick, even though there are quite a few graphics and pictures. But there was little to no real wait, and so I give it a 4 out of 5. Navigability is smooth, with all the links clearly labeled. With so many articles, one would not expect that the site would be scroll-navigated, and so this doesn't seem to be an issue. I give it a 4 out of 5. Graphics are present, yet simple. Mostly the website is adorned around the edges of the page with graphics, and there are a few pictures of article authors and players next to related links. It isn't cluttered, and isn't boring either. I give it a 3 out of 5. Overall I rate this site a 3.75.

Saxophone.com

This site is a commercial site for the purchase of saxophones. The content is mostly information on saxophones (reviews, etc.) and pictures of them. I give it a 3 out of 5. The load speed is fast, due to the simple design and mostly linked information, and so I give it a 4 out of 5. Since displaying all the saxes on the page in a scroll navigated way might make for a very long page which takes a while to load, the page is set up independently, using links to view each bit of information or picture. Navigability is smooth and what one would expect for this type of site, and so I give it 4 out of 5. The graphics are clean and simple, utilizing a holiday theme for the Christmas season. I give graphics a 3 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 3.5.

Wfg.woodwind.org

Wfg.woowind.org is a site for finding fingering charts and alternate fingerings for saxophone. It appears to be very extensive and helpful, with diagrams and explanations for every fingering chart. I give content a 4 out of 5 due to the importance and usefulness of this information to a saxophonist. The load speed is quick, as the site design is simple and clean. I give it a 5 out of 5. The navigability is link based, because displaying all the fingering charts might make for a slow-loading, or cluttered page. The links are labeled well and easily navigable, so I give navigability a 4 out of 5. The graphics are simple, with octave range graphics sitting above each link to let the saxophonist know which register the fingering chart is referring to, which is very helpful. I give graphics a 5 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 4.5.

Library.thinkquest.org

This site contains information about the origins of the saxophone and seeks to detail its use in modern music. The content, however, is pretty scarce, and what is there is somewhat oversimplified, offering no real information of value. I give content a 2 out of 5. The load speed is a bit slower than previous sites, because there are some annoying graphics that pop up, presumably advertising something, which actually block some of the information at first! I give load speed a 3 out of 5. Navigability is pretty simple, in that all of the information is nested in the parent file to be read on the first page. However, the links to the side are not clearly labeled and actually look as if an intended graphic is missing, so that one has to hold the mouse over the link to read what it is. I give navigability a 3 out of 5. Graphics, as I mentioned before, are present but irritating or confusing at best. I give graphics a 2 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 2.5.

Mindworkshop.com

The content on this webpage is interesting. The author seems to have taken a lighthearted approach that sometimes comes across as apathetic. His information is mostly correct, but seems biased in ways, and so I give the content a 3 out of 5. Load speed is pretty quick, despite plenty of graphics and a very, very long page. I give load speed a 4 out of 5. Navigability for this site is pretty simple, it's all nested in the parent file and set up to scroll-navigate. Finding specific info might prove difficult, however, if one had to read the entire page or scan through it just to find something. I give navigability a 3 out of 5. Graphics are fairly abundant, with pictures for every section of the article. Most of them are pretty descriptive and relevant. I give graphics a 4 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 3.5.

Introduction to saxophone acoustics

This site is dedicated to explaining the acoustical properties of the saxophone. The content is a bit advanced, utilizing such words as "non-sinusoidal," and offering only minimal explanation. While this content is most likely very well researched and correct, it would prove a bit confusing for most users, and so I rate content a 4 out of 5. Load speed is rather quick, as the site is fairly simple in construction and not bogged down with many complicated graphics or advertisements. I give load speed a 4 out of 5. The sections of the site are all available by scrolling down, however, you can access them by clicking links at the top of the page for a more specific approach to finding info. For this feature, I give navigability a 5 out of 5. Being a highly technical site, the graphics on this page are also pretty in-depth. While clearly demonstrative and understandable, they might be slightly confusing for anyone not familiar with the instrument already. I give graphics a 4 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 4.25.

Saxophone History Timeline

Here is a saxophone history timeline compiled by an assistant professor of saxophone at Crane School. It appears well researched and comprehensive, with many important milestones from conception to recent saxophone history. I give content a 4 out of 5. The site loads very quickly because there are no graphics to speak of, only text. I give load speed a 5 out of 5. The navigability is very simple as the text is all on one page, scroll-navigable. Since one is not likely to be searching a timeline for specific info, the length of the page isn't as much of a hindrance as it might otherwise be, and so I give navigability a 4 out of 5. There are no graphics on this site, and so I give graphics a 1 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 3.5.

Overall, I rate this site a 4.5.

Saxophone General Information

This site claims to have general information about the saxophone, but seems to veer more towards trivial info about Adolphe sax and saxophonists more than the instrument itself. Also, there is not much information (important or not) offered here at all. I give content a 2 out of 5. Load speed is really quick, probably due to the diminutive nature of the page. I give load speed a 5 out of 5. Navigability is simple because you see everything there is to see without even scrolling down. Though this is because of a lack of information, I must give the navigability a 4 out of 5. Graphics are sparse, though relevant, and so I give graphics a 3 out of 5. Overall, I reluctantly rate this site a 3.25.

It seems that no graphic is without a purpose, and so I give it a 4 out of 5 on graphics. Overall, I give this site a 4.75.

Saxophone History

Here is another timeline site of saxophone history. The content is a bit more comprehensive in nature, with more years and important dates being filled in. I give content a 4 out of 5. Load speed, however, takes a bit longer than on other sites, probably due to an unnecessary sound clip that plays while you peruse the timeline. I give load speed a 3 out of 5. The site is all nested in the parent file, and is scroll-navigable for easy access to all the information, so I give this site a 4 out of 5 on navigability. Graphics are well-thought and relevant. Instrumentally Speaking

This site attempts to offer general information about the saxophone, but tends to rehash the same old information found elsewhere and adds a bit of conjecture and unneeded personal opinions and stories. Toward the end it even lists 3 "notable sax players", all of whom did indeed play saxophone, but two of whom were veritable giants and one of whom was far more known as a clarinetist. I feel that the content of this site is weak and therefore give it a 2 out of 5. The site does load fairly quickly, and so I give it 3 out of 5 in load speed. All of the information available is found on one page, and so navigability it easy, getting a 4 out of 5. The graphics, though few, are helpful and there's even a chart of sax sizes as compared to one another and a scale in feet. I give graphics a 4 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 3.75.

Saxtalk.com

Saxtalk is a place on the web designed for saxophonists to correspond and to share saxophone news and information. The content, therefore, is gathered from anyone who posts and is obviously subject to scrutiny, being that it is largely opinion-based. Also, some of it appears to have no saxophone connection at all. For these reasons I give content a 3 out of 5. The site loads quickly, and so I give load speed a 4 out of 5. Different sections of the website are linked for easy access and brief sections of articles can be read on the front page to skim before you decide whether to click the link. I give navigability a 4 out of 5. There are few graphics on this page other than boxes and text bars, so I give graphics a 2 out of 5. Overall, I rate this site a 3.25.
