Guitar Ensemble Evaluation
Page
Kent Mulcahy
Fall 2003
The purpose of this page is to evaluate
the effectivness of various guitar enesmble web pages. This will
include load times, appearance, ease of navigation and wealth
of information. It will be graded in letter grades, ie: A- or
D+
By far, the best page I reviewed was the
University of St. Thomas page. There were lots of colorful pertinent
photos, and a wealth of information. As I stated in my review,
it looks like either the person who did this page cared a lot
about their program, or they spent the extra money to have a proffesional
do it. Either way, a lot of care is displayed in the page.
As for the worst page, it's probably a
multiple-way tie. There were many pages that were only black and
white, no pictures, and little or no information. Such pages were
those from Clemson and Western Kentucky University. I think it's
interesting, or a little sad perhaps, that even though it's the
new millineum, people don't use the technology at hand to make
the page for their job look a little more proffesional.

| Radford
University |
This page loaded quickly, and came up with a professional
looking page. It features pictures of the involved student, and states
the goals of the program. The main information of auditions and such
are found in a link at the bottom of the page. I give this page a
B- simply because I prefer all the main info to be presented on the
main page. |
| Univeristy
of Oregon |
The University of Oregon's page is a simple page with no links
and also not much information. But to the page's credit, it doens't
appear that the guitar program is really a serious program to the
school. If this were a page for a school that was serious about
guitar, it would be a horrible page, as stands, I give it a C.
|
| University
of St. Thomas |
This is an incredible page. It appears that not only is the guitar
very important to this school, but they took the time to have a
professional design the web page. All information one would want
is presented with a link, each link leading to another page with
a picture or a design of sorts. This page is a solid A.
|
| University
of Cincinnati |
The purpose of this page isn't really ti hawk the guitar program.
Rather, it tells what a prospective student would have to do to
graduate in the program. As a guitar page, I give it an F.
|
| Western
Washington University |
This page looks nice, has a pic, and lots of info. A-
|
| University
of Louisville |
This page comes up when searching for guitar ensembles, but guitar
is not mentioned when the page comes up. I don't even feel I can
give this page a grade. It's informative, but not in a guitar sense.
|
| DalHousie
University |
This isn't meant to be a highly informative page...I think it's
really an offshoot of a larger guitar page. It tells some information,
but not a lot. I give it a C.
|
|
Duquesne
University
|
This is another highly professional page.
All information is easily outlined, and easily accessable. Another
solid A. |
|
North Eastern
Illinois University
|
This page only as a picture of the director of the program.
With no mentioning of the students, or any real info at all, I give
it a D. |
| Central
Washington University |
Like the page above it, this is another one paragraph
page with no real info unless you email the director. Thusly, I give
it another D. |
| Rowan
University |
The page is very nice looking, but only one paragraph
on the guitar. Since it looks nice, I'll give it a C-. |
| Middle
Tennessee State University |
This is et another on paragraph page that doesn't look
that great. However, it does have a section where you can listen to
the ensemble, because of that, I give it a B. |
| Southern
Oregon University |
This page has two good pictures of the guitar ensemble in action,
which most pages do not. The info is basic, but it is there. I'll
give it a C.
|
| Wesleyan
University |
This looks like a page from a semesterly catalogue of
classes. Not real info, just how to sign up for it. Since it is a
different type of page, I'll give a B based on what its purpose it. |
| Clemson |
This page has no color, and no voice in
its two paragraphs. The info is kind of there, but it is by no means
abundant. It gets an F. |
| Del
Mar College |
This page, while it doesn't look extremely proffesional,
has color, a picture, and information on it. While I have seen some
that look better, I'll give it a B because more than most of the other
bland pages. |
| Winthrop
University |
This page has multiple pics, lots of info,
and links if any questions need answering. Thought has obviously gone
into this page. A |
| Bradley
University |
This page doesn't really have any info of the program
itself, just the director and what he's done. D- |
| Emory
University |
Virtually no information, a picture that
doesn't load, and little or no eye candy. D- |
