Thomas Couvillon is an Assistant Professor in the EKU Department of Music, where he serves as coordinator of music theory and composition studies.  His works have been performed in venues throughout the South and Southwest, including the Music Nouvelle Festival, the High Voltage Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, the Festival of New Music at Louisiana State University, and at regional meetings of the Society of Composers and the National Association of Composers (USA).  His music has also been broadcast on radio as part of a NPR affiliate concert series.  Recently, he was commissioned to write the main theme and additional music for Where the River Bends, a documentary that was aired on Kentucky Educational Television in March 2007.

In addition to composing music for a wide variety of traditional media, Dr. Couvillon has done significant work in the fields of electronic music and multimedia. In 2005, he was commissioned by the Sam Houston State University Dance department to provide the score for Return to the Land, a combination of dance, electronic music, and video, which was performed at the DiverseWorks Theatre in Houston, Texas.  His most current project combines images of Kentucky's natural beauty with original electronic music.

Also active as a music theorist, Dr. Couvillon has given papers on a variety of topics at professional conferences.  Most recently, he presented a paper on tonal references in the late works of Arnold Schoenberg at the Music Theory Midwest Conference. Dr. Couvillon has previously held teaching positions at Sam Houston State University, Arizona State University, and Tulane University.  Dr. Couvillon holds the Ph. D. degree in composition and music theory from Louisiana State University.
