The Department of Music offers students knowledge of historical, stylistic, and theoretical aspects of music, relating this knowledge to the literature of music, and developing excellence in performance and teaching. The National Association of Schools of Music, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education accredit our music degrees. Our primary functions are to prepare music specialists for service in the public schools, to prepare students for careers in private studio teaching, concert performance, professional ensemble performance, teaching in colleges and universities, and other aspects of professional musicianship including the music industry. The Department of Music offers several options including the Bachelor of Music in Music Teaching degree, Bachelor of Music in Music Merchandising, Music Performance, and Music Theory and Composition. In addition to preparing students for careers in music, the discipline acquired in meeting the demands of musical performance may also serve as an excellent background for persons desiring to pursue careers in other fields. The Department also offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Performing Arts to prepare students for a career in musical theatre. This degree program is jointly administered by the Department of Music and the Department of English and Theatre. The Department offers a minor consisting of piano, music theory, music theory, music history, and electives. Other degree options including current curriculum guidelines are available. Graduate Programs feature the Master of Music options in Performance, Choral Conducting, Theory/Composition, General, or Instrumental Conducting.
